“A mother's love is a labour of quiet hours, uncounted and unbilled. You do not feel its true weight until you stand in the light of all she did in the shadows.

a tribute to the hearts that are our first home.
To our mothers

Gender disparity ratio

Narrowing down the states

To ensure the sample adequately represented national disparity, states were selected based on population size. The methodology involved shortlisting the three most populous states from each administrative zone. For the central zone, however, only one state was selected, as the two largest states in that region have comparable gender ratio

Percentage participation

Crocheted throw

Just like daily chores, crochet involves thousands of repetitive, methodical stitches. It is a Time-Consuming and Repetitive technique. It also carries weight which is perfect to demonstrate “weight of labour of love”

Floral representation of granny square as a metaphor

The flower is the visual representation of the care, nurturing, and domestic work—the unpaid labor.
It is the organic, living, and essential core.

Colour chosen

two distinct colours were chosen to represent overall data about men and women

Sizing of the square

size of the squares varied based on the average mins spent in unpaid labour by each state which also resonates with the time spent by me to crochet the squares

Yarn variation - thickness and texture

percentage participation was depicted by the type of yarn used to crochet the petals of the granny square

Calculation Sheet

I used google sheets to do all my calculations and also to document the time taken by me to crochet each square, strips, throw, tucking the yarn and to do finishing stitch of the throw
